Jamie Cullum in 2012: The Highlights

2012 has been another incredible year for Jamie and also his fans as we try to keep up with what he's doing!

As is customary when the year draws to an close, I would like to extend my thanks to all of you who continue to visit All Things Cullum. It never ceases to amaze me how far-reaching Jamie's music is and this is reflected in the wonderful worldwide JC community.

Thankyou!

So by way of reminder, here is a summary of some of the year's events involving Mr Cullum, one of the busiest men in showbiz, that have been covered on All Things Cullum! Grab a cuppa and enjoy.

Jamie, as you know, has been working hard on getting the new album (known as LP6) finished but that's not all. He's also managed to find time for a masterclass or two, Guest Director for Cheltenham Jazz Festival (again), TV appearance of Titanic proportions, Desert Island Discs, tea with The Queen, huge San Miguel and Martell Cognac advertising campaigns, interviews with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney and Charlie Watts (of The Rolling Stones), duets with Dame Cleo Laine, Gregory Porter and Diana Krall, charity fundraisers, corporate gigs round the world, and that's hardly scratched the surface!

2012 began and ended with a Jamie Cullum Masterclass.

He was interviewed by fellow Radio 2 broadcaster Jo Whiley. BBC Introducing Musician's Masterclass. You can watch it again here

Then to finish 2012, just last month, we enjoyed a masterclass, this time with Sir Michael Parkinson in the driving seat in a brand new series Parkinson MasterclassThe feedback was incredible and made many new JC fans.  Read about the recording of Parkinson Masterclass and see clips of it here

A fundraiser for Children's hospice charity Helen and Douglas House took place in Oxford and joining Jamie were Theo Jackson, Eliza Doolittle, KT Tunstall and Beardyman. Did you download your exclusive Cullum/Beardyman duet?

One of my favourite moments of the year: After introducing many of us to the delights of vocalist Gregory Porter, Jamie finally got to meet and interview him for his BBC Radio 2 show!

Listen to a clip below:

For the third year running, Jamie was appointed Guest Director for Cheltenham Jazz Festival. He also was the special guest for Gregory Porter's solo show at the festival, singing with Gregory live on stage for the very first time!

A new award to put on the mantlepiece, Jamie won Jazz Broadcaster of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in May.

Another highlight was Jamie's Desert Island Discs interview by Kirsty Young for BBC Radio 4. Flying against tradition, Jamie chose songs that weren't his own and he played them live. See his selections here.

Jamie co-wrote the German Eurovision entry Standing Still, featured in a BBC Radio 2 Dudley Moore Special, performed at the Radio 2Day finale concert held at the 100 Club, and was even a narrator on Titanic: A Commemoration in Music & Film for BBC Two. He appears on Harry Shearer's new album, and took part in the Amy Winehouse Foundation Ball.

A new song Everything You Didn't Do was released as part of a huge advertising campaign for San Miguel in Spain and saw an interesting collaboration with three Spanish artists - Carlos Sadness, Nita and Frank T. It was accompanied by a snappy video

In July, Jamie appeared as special guest for the first Soho Sessions at Pizza Express Jazz Club, London, where he sang three new songs and also joined Gregory Porter on stage once again.

Cast your eyes down this list of interviews and live sessions featured on the Jamie Cullum show on BBC Radio 2 in 2012. Add to this the gems Jamie has unearthed from the BBC Archives aswell as the many new artists he has introduced to his audience and you can see why Tuesday evenings with Jamie on the wireless has become something of a tradition for Cullum fans! The show continues to attract new listeners and educate listeners in the world of jazz and beyond. Do you tune in every Tuesday at 7pm?

  1. Thanks for posting the very many highlights of Jamie's 2012. Amazing! And varied! ;-)

How can I find out when Jamie's 2013 interviews will be broadcast? I'm especially interested in his interview & duet with Kurt Elling and don't want to miss it. Happy to check occasionally if you'll just point me in the right direction.

Jamie tweeted in November: "I had the chance to interview and sing with the master that is Kurt Elling today. I sound like a mouse singing by his side."

*That* I've got to hear (laughing...)!

Heartfelt congratulations to Jamie & Sophie! I recommend Jack Kornfield's story, "Song of the Spirit" from his book, Path With Heart. Have they heard the baby's song yet?

Blessings of the winter holy days to all,

    Trudy

As soon as I hear when the Kurt Elling interview is due to be aired, I will post here. Sometimes Jamie gives us a headsup during his shows too!
