Review: Jamie Cullum in Paris [13.02.14]

Once again I had the privilege of seeing Jamie Cullum play to a sold-out Olympia in Paris this week. The last show at that venue in 2010 was incredible, rated one of my favourite JC shows ever (read that review here), so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed!

French artist Sophie Maurin and her band opened the show and what an entertaining set. Clarinet, scissors and cello included! She has a lovely voice and a fun, quirky style. Watch a clip from the show. It was a special moment when Sophie returned to the stage later to perform her song Far Away with Jamie. You can see that here.  Look out for my interview with Sophie coming to the blog soon and check out her music at sophiemaurin.fr

I witnessed again that the French know how to enjoy a concert and how much they love Jamie. Before the band even took to the stage, anticipation was overflowing. The audience clapped, danced and sang along at every opportunity. The floor was literally shaking! Yet when Jamie played solo, you could have heard a pin drop, everyone was so attentive and respectful. Jamie was so overwhelmed by the reaction as you can see here and this was only a few songs into the show! He didn't stop smiling.

It was my first time of hearing the excellent Bjork cover Unison performed live. Jamie jumped into the standing area to dance during Love For Sale much to the delight of the crowd. Band members Brad, Tom, Rory and Loz were all on fine form as always. Never get tired of hearing old favourites All At Sea and High & Dry, just beautiful. The now obligatory Mixtape Moment saw the whole theatre erupt as everyone jumped on Jamie's command.

The final moments of the show took me back to Jamie's show in 2008 at Theatre du Chatalet, Paris, when he performed Gran Torino live for the very first time. Outstanding. Again.

This is why I keep going back for more:
